Perfect Little Stitches

Special Instructions for Angel Wings

Open each embroidery file and print in 1:1 format.  Hand-write the file name inside the hoop outline.  Trim along the hoop lines to create templates.  Note that the wings are designed to be stitched in the 120mm Pfaff hoop.  Adapt these instructions for your own sewing machine.

The angel wings are made to be attached to a doll, teddy bear or holiday decoration.  They may also be used in applique on a sweatshirt or pillow, alone or with an angel body appliqued over them.  The small size is perfect for use with the Choir Girl design.

For attachable angel wings, cut two layers of fabric and one layer of wash-away stabilizer 9" x 13".   The illustrations show twinkle organza, but any tightly woven fabric will do.  Fuse together the two layers of fabric.  Place fabric over stabilizer.  Hoop at the left end of the fabric.

For applique, only one layer of fabric is needed, 9" x 13".  Use adequate stabilizer under the garment or pillow fabric.  Follow the instructions below, except that you will have a layer of fabric under the wings instead of the wash-away stabilizer.
If using a metallic or monofilament thread, select the slow speed setting on your Pfaff and use a needle made for metallics.  Stitch the first color of Wingleft.pcs.  Clip threads and remove hoop from sewing machine, but do not unhoop, and do not remove the basting stitches from the beginning of the design.

awings3.jpg (40124 bytes) Trim the wing fabric to 1/16" outside the stitching as shown in at right and below.  Take care not to cut the stabilizer (or fabric) underneath.
Attach hoop to sewing machine and sew color two, but use the same thread as for color one.

You are now ready to position the hoop for Wingrigt.pcs.  It will help if you put very narrow, double-sided sticky tape on the underside of the inner hoop.  If you can see through your fabrics, place the template for Wingrigt.pcs under the fabric as a guide.  Position the right wing so that the basting stitches from each wing will overlap by 1/8".

With the hoop back in the sewing machine, sew the basting stitches of Wingrigt.pcs. (color 1).  You may wish to remove these stitches and re-position the hoop, or move the design by using the positioning functions in your Pfaff.  You will need to select the Wingrigt.pcs design anew in order to re-position it.  If the basting stitches seem to line up, then proceed.  Don't be too concerned about perfect alignment since you will be sewing the wings to something at the point where they join (or appliqueing over them) and can hide any minor mis-alignment.

Finish sewing color one.  Trim the wing fabric as before.  Sew color two with the same thread.  Remove from hoop.  Trim away excess stabilizer and remove hanging thread and basting stitches.  Rinse away stabilizer.  Blot between paper towels, then dry flat.  You may wish to add spray starch, then press.

The new smaller size angel wings are designed to sew in a single hooping.  In the New home and Pfaff formats, there are two sizes: Wingpair and Wingprlg. in Viking and Brother there is only the one additional size: Wingpair.  Sew as you would the Wingleft file, trimming and finishing as described above.
